"Steps in Time" are a junior folk dance side based in North Dorset, mostly made up of girls between the ages of 4 and 14, although more boys have joined the group. We perform mainly traditional English / Dorset folk dances from the 17th & 18th century but also some medieval & Welsh dances ; these include step, garland and ribbon. We also perform mummers plays throughout the year including, St. George and the Dragon. We have performed at a variety of venues from local fetes to international festivals, from an abbey to woods for the BBC, as well as representing England and Dorset at the Europeade. Our main costume is in a Regency style inspired by Jane Austen and consists of white over-dresses with a coloured under-dress, for the medieval dances our dresses are of crushed velvet in various colours. We meet weekly, split into 3 classes and are taught by unpaid volunteers. We hope you find this site of interest and please feel free to contact us if you require any more details.

Local Heritage Initiative
Steps in Time where awarded a grant from the
Local Heritage Initiative to record our year in Dorset(2007). This provided a
record of some of our dances, music, drama and performances. A DVD/booklet has
been produced which will be supplied to schools, libraries and traditional
archives. As part of this we ran number of workshops to pass on our
skills to others. These workshops were run from the 21st - 23rd Feb 2007 and
based at Springhead, Fontmell Magna and were for Adults and Children. Click here a detailed schedule.
